    • "A Destructive Hail Storm in Wilkes.
      Correspondence of the Landmark.

One of the heaviest and most destructive hail storms I have ever seen passed over this section yesterday about 2 o'clock. The whole face of the earth was literally covered with hail from one to three or four inches deep and in places it drifted to a depth of 10 or 12 inches. The stones ranged from the size of a buck shot to that of a partridge egg or a fraction larger. There was not very much wind while all the hail was falling and it fell pretty straight down. Corn, small grain and all garden vegetables damaged greatly, but to what extent the writer is not able to say. A great deal of the fruit is cut off and that left on the trees is badly bruised. The leaves are riddled and worn out and the ground is green with worn out shreds of leaves. All vegetation in the main path of the storm is ragged, frazzled and much of it utterly ruined. The writer has not yet accertained the extent of the storm, but hopes it is not great.

      POSTMASTER.
      Brushy Mountain, N. C., May 21st 1895."
