      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      THE GRANVILLE DISTRICT AND GRANVILLE LAND GRANTS
      In 1663 King Charles II of England granted a large part of the Carolinas
      to eight men. Then in 1728 seven of these Lords Proprietors sold their
      land back to England, but the eighth share was not sold. After surveying,
      which began in 1744, it was determined that the land owned by John Lord
      Carteret, Earl of Granville, should be south of the Virginia line, bounded
      on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the South Seas. The
      southern border ran along the southern borders of present-day Rowan,
      Davidson, Randolph and Chatham counties to the coast, and was known as the
      Granville District.
      The name listed below are those who received grants within the Granville
      District, but more specifically within Johnston County, from 1749 to 1763.
      This information was obtained from North Carolina Division of Archives.
